Issues

One day when our now adult daughter, Elisabeth, was about 2 years old she just couldn't seem to 'perk up'. She was normally a very content, happy child. I was going about my normal chores such as cooking and cleaning, nothing out of the ordinary, and she was close by as always. Daily, we would play, craft, watch a favorite show from time-to-time, take walks, do errands, take a nap ... you know, all of the great things that toddlers love doing.

I can't remember anything specific about this day that would have sparked a different mood, but boy oh boy, was she ever in one. Nothing ... absolutely nothing ... would crack a smile on this child's face. Maybe, she didn't sleep well the night before. Maybe, she needed chocolate. Okay, that one was a joke based on my own experience. Either or, something was off, and she was about to let me know.

As I was at the stove working on a meal, she was standing beside me and being a bit fussy. I asked, "Elisabeth, what's wrong?" No answer, just some whimpering with a pouty lip. I had loved on her, of course, and talked with her; doing all the things parents try to do when their little one seems to feel poorly. She didn't have a temperature, a belly ache, an 'owie' or anything she could express or that I could detect. It's important to note, she had an excellent vocabulary and could conversate very well for that age.

Finally, I asked, "Elisabeth, are you just having issues today?" With a serious face, she looked down at her little bare feet, then back at me seemingly perplexed, and said, "But Mommy, I don't have on any shoes!"

Oh my ... That's all it took. I scooped up that adorable bundle of baby in my arms and laughed until she was laughing too, unbeknownst to what all of the giggling was about!

The next time you're having a grumpy-face day filled with issues, remember this story and look down at your bare feet!
