Angel Biscuits
A biscuit that is extra soft and delightfully light.
Angel biscuits are perfect to take to church homecomings, family gatherings, or to make and simply enjoy a quiet moment of 'mmmm mmmm good' right at home. You might find a recipe for angel biscuits in your collection of family hand-me-down recipes or in a church cookbook.
I first experienced savoring angel biscuits at my grandparents' family meals. Nanny made these perfect biscuits that were petite in comparison to other biscuits and nearly melted in your mouth. Not only do angel biscuits pair well with a classic white gravy, but they are also delicious with homemade strawberry freezer preserves. I don't think there is a wrong way to eat an angel biscuit; just eat and enjoy!
There's no time like the present! Let's gather our ingredients and get baking!
Angel Biscuits
Ingredients
2 pkg. dry yeast
1/2 cup warm water
2 cup buttermilk
5 cup self-rising flour
3 tsp. sugar
1 cup shortening (or 1 cup butter) (or 1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce)
Instructions
Dissolve yeast in warm water.
Stir yeast into buttermilk. Mix well and set aside.
Combine flour and sugar; cut in shortening (butter or applesauce) until mixture resembles coarse meal.
Add buttermilk mixture; stir until dry ingredients are moistened.
Turn dough out on lightly floured surface. Knead lightly 3 or 4 times
Roll dough to 1/2-inch thickness; cut with a biscuit cutter.
Place biscuits on lightly greased baking sheets.
Bake at 450 for 10 to 12 minutes.
Remove from oven and brush tops with melted butter.
Tip: Dough may be stored covered in refrigerator up to 3 days. Bring to room temperature before baking.
Challenge - Try not to eat too many in one sitting! :-)

You know what to say. . . Get in my belly!
