Chilly Reminders

In early Spring, the chill of Winter is still present in the wind, lingering to remind us of what we have been through in order for us to appreciate what is to come. Once stark, bare branches begin to grow colorful leaves and blossoms.  Burst of frigid gusts turn into warm, welcoming winds.  This analogy stands true for much of life.

Years ago, I shared an original song for a graduation ceremony.  One of the lines states that when we look back, we’ll see what we’ve left and know where we are now.  The rest of the song clearly shares the message that we should make each day count.  I believe that in order to truly do this there are times that we should remember where we have come from.

Now, don’t misinterpret my words as to think that I feel we need to live in the past.  On the contrary, I’m very aware we should look and move forward.  We have been given a foundation in some form and throughout life we build upon this foundation.  This is true in our personal lives, in businesses, in churches, etc.  Foundations are important.  Without a good foundation everything else would crumble.  Yet, with just a foundation there would be no growth.  On that foundation, we build, expand, and are sometimes left with the task of rebuilding.   

In order to experience growth, occasionally we need to remember where we have been.  At times remembrance can be hard, painful, or even chilling because not all memories are pleasant.  Yet, we can reflect in gratitude realizing where God has brought us from.  His righteous right hand is there for the taking. (Isaiah 41:10).  When we reflect upon a not-so-pleasant time, we can appreciate that He brought us through.  The thought of bitter times that brought death even, makes the comfort of life-giving times seem even warmer.
