Before the popularity of plastic bottled condiments, glass bottles were widely used.  This meant that some waiting was required when pouring sauces for dipping or dressing a meal.  For example, instead of giving the ketchup a squeeze and instantly getting a controlled amount on your plate or food, you patiently waited for the drop (or glop) to present itself.  If you were in a restaurant you restrained from impatiently smacking the sides and banging the bottom of the bottle, or worse, jabbing a knife into the bottle and digging around, totally losing all ability to control your urge for ketchup.  Of course, we all know what happened next, after the episode of bottle-rage . . . GLOP!  You wanted ketchup, but not like that!

When thinking about this and how we are such an impatient society – a microwave world – here and now – I am reminded of the many verses of scripture in the Bible regarding patience.  Time and time again the words “wait” or “be still” are written in the scriptures. Psalm 46:10 "Be still and

know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth! Psalm 27:14 says, “Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD.”  Psalm 62:1 reads, “Truly my soul waits upon God: from him cometh my salvation.”  Those are just two examples of many.

So often we get a feeling about something, or an idea and we want to see the results immediately.  We want to possess it, taste it, see it . . . We want it, and we want it now!  It is so easy to visualize, to envision, or to dream, but waiting for the reality of these things to come to fruition is the hard part.  Yet we also know from the scriptures that waiting is essential for gaining strength; our faith builds from seeing the results.

In many situations, instead of rushing things and taking matters into our own hands to handle things our way, we should remember that it is better to be still and patiently wait for the blessing to come.  After all, waiting is always better than ending up with a big, gloppy mess!
