Cakes are fun! Holiday gatherings seem to always include a wide variety of pies, cakes and traditional or unique desserts. When my children were younger, we started the tradition of making a birthday cake for Jesus each Christmas. Before slicing the cake, we would gather together and sing, "Happy Birthday, Jesus." Along with reading the Biblical account of Jesus' birth, this was a special way of keeping the focus of Christmas first and foremost on the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ.
Birthday cakes are certainly a tradition throughout the year for many because why wouldn't we want to celebrate the life of those we cherish?! Just as unique as those we celebrate are, so are preferences of different types of cakes. I personally like cakes that are a bit non-traditional. I prefer cakes that are moist with filling or icing that is whippier or custard-like. My husband shares this preference, which makes our cooking adventures extra fun.
"Strawberry Nutella Cake! Yummm!" This was my husband's birthday cake request after browsing quite a list of cake options in search for something unique. Adding my own twist here and there, the results were an irresistible cake that did not last long! He said it was by far the best cake he had ever had for his birthday. Such a heart-filled statement made this chef tear up... that's a very special compliment to the chef.
The best part about this cake was how happy it made my husband. There is always something so special about the gratitude he shows. I am just as thankful for the thanks! :)
Now, let's get to baking and creating! Gather the ingredients and be prepared for, "Yummms!"
Strawberry Nutella Cake
Ingredients:
1 strawberry cake mix OR make your own favorite basic cake mix.
1 cup water
1/3 cup vegetable oil
3 eggs
1 cup Nutella
¼ cup sour cream
cool whip
Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 350°
Lightly grease two 9" round pans
Mix together cake mix, water, oil, and eggs in large bowl with mixer on medium speed or beat vigorously by hand 2 minutes. Pour into pans
Bake as directed on mix or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean
While cakes are baking mix Nutella and sour cream together in medium bowl and set aside
After cakes are cool, carefully invert cakes onto plates, ice the top of the base round with prepared Nutella icing and cool whip
Place other round on top, ice and decorate with fresh sliced strawberries.
Enjoy!
May joy arise from the song you sing,
as great as the depths of the gratitude from which it sounds.
